FLUX: Urban Coral Network

The main objective of ‘Flux’, a project located around Government Cut, is expansion and creating awareness of Miami coral. Some critical factors that must be addressed in order to accomplish this are providing substrate and habitats for coral as well as for species that live in harmony with them, including but not limited to mangroves. A huge benefit of expanding coral reefs around Government Cut, in conjunction with research, is the revitalization of dwindling seagrass beds across Biscayne Bay - the greatest threat to them being the silty, turbid water left in the wake of the PortMiami deep dredge project.

By replacing Government Cut edge conditions with enhanced structures, increased flushing and filtering provided by coral and mangroves should bring clarity to the seawater, thus encouraging growth of the grasses. As these become better established, they also will serve as filterers, and turbidity in the Bay should be reduced overall. Funding and engagement from nearby communities and tourists will be critical in order to bring these important coral reefs to life.

Envisioned for select sites around Government Cut are sea wall structures that invite, as opposed to resisting, the tides and changing coastline due to sea-level rise. Simultaneously providing habitats for species below water and in-between, humans can also engage these structures at varying levels – either through snorkeling, wading in tide pools, or sitting and enjoying the scenery.
